Messages & Meaning

How do you know when something is trying to get your attention?  When is a bird more than a bird?  When is it a symbol of something more?

When is an encounter with nature trying to tell us something more?

Simply, when we have an encounter that draws our attention or is completely out of the ordinary.  There is more complexity to it.  And I am not an expert…not even close.

I have had an experience with nature this week that I want to tell you about.

I love raptors…the birds of prey.  They all have talons, curved beaks, have keen eye sight and possess great strength.  They include eagles, hawks and vultures.

Tuesday, I was rushing to get to the Centre.  When I saw that there was not a parking space at the Centre, I had a little tantrum and then circled the lot to park.  I chose the spot furthest away from the Centre to leave spaces that were closer available for members.

Cranky, I walked towards the Centre and I saw a big bird sitting on the car parked closest to the door of the Centre.  There was a hawk!  I thought red-tailed?  I was too far away at that point.  I got within 6 feet of the bird.  I didn’t want to scare it because those talons are sharp and could damage the car.

I spent about 5 minutes with it.  During that time, it flew to another spot on the car.

I was worried it was injured and needed help.

I took a giant step forward and it flew away.

No flash of red tail feathers.  Not a red-tailed hawk.

I looked at my pictures carefully and I believe it is a Cooper’s hawk.

The encounter felt very profound to me.  So, I began to research the spiritual meanings of Cooper’s hawk.

I knew that one of my dearest friends would love to see the pictures.  I also knew that Cooper is her maiden name and that there was a message for her too.

I also know in my very basic knowledge that hawks are messengers from the Spirit world and that knowledge comes from my indigenous friends.

Here’s what I found out.

Cooper’s Hawks represent strength, adaptability, courage and wisdom.  They encourage you to look at the big picture and to not get caught up in the fine details.  It is the time to harness your inner power to achieve your dreams.

There is always more than meet the eye when you have an encounter with Cooper’s Hawk.  It is time to evaluate your path and be adaptable.

I know that more will be revealed to me as I spend some time in meditation and contemplation.

For me, when something you see is out of the ordinary.  Or if a song you hear grabs your attention.  Or something you smell brings you a loving memory.  Perhaps, it carries with it a message.  Ponder coincidences…there may be some magic there just for you!
